Pottsville Free Public Library: A Carnegie Legacy Celebration

Join us on Saturday, November 7th from 6-9 PM as we celebrate the Carnegie Legacy and the Pottsville Free Public Library! Enjoy beverages as well as hors d’oeuvres by Hess Catering while listening to live music and supporting the Pottsville Free Public Library’s future.

Why a Carnegie Legacy celebration? The Pottsville Free Public Library was one of 59 public libraries in Pennsylvania funded by the Andrew Carnegie Foundation between 1886 and 1917. Pottsville received $45,000 from the Foundation in 1914, although World War I prevented construction from starting until 1919. The Pottsville Free Public Library was built using the Carnegie funds plus a generous donation from the Sheafer family in honor of their sister who was active in early childhood education and passed away in 1919. In 2026 an initiative from the Carnegie Foundation, Carnegie Libraries 250, provided $10,000 unrestricted gifts to each of the more than 1,300 Carnegie Libraries still operating in the United States, in honor of the United States’ 250th anniversary.

Tickets are $50 per person, and must be purchased by October 24. Stop by the Circulation Desk if you prefer to use cash or check, or you can purchase them online via our EventBrite link at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pottsville-free-public-library-a-carnegie-legacy-celebration-tickets-1989999412813 (credit card purchases do have an added fee to cover what the companies charge the Library to accept them).
