New Digitization Service @ the Pottsville Library

Our digitization services have expanded! In addition to VHS and camcorder tape home movies, the Pottsville Free Public Library now has the ability to turn old 8mm home movies into digital files you can watch on your phone or computer. The Kodak Reels Film Digitizer is able to convert 8mm and Super 8 film on reels up to 7″ in diameter. The equipment does not have the ability to capture sound from Super 8 films; regular 8mm films typically don’t have sound. Once the equipment captures the film frame by frame, the frames are converted into an MP4 video which can be viewed on most devices.

Contact the Reference Department at 570-622-8880 x11 or via email at potref@pottsvillelibrary.org with your questions about what we can digitize for you and what our limits are. The service is free, but you will need to provide your own flash drive or external hard drive to take home the digitized files (even the small 3″ reels are too large to email or upload). We do ask you to sign a liability waiver because while we will do our best to handle your film carefully, any film that had been spliced or damaged in the past has the potential to get caught and separated or otherwise damaged on this equipment. We have experienced old splice tape failing because the adhesive was too old, and we do not have the equipment to re-splice the film.
