SUMMARY:9th Annual Art as Healing Exhibit\, with Schuylkill Hope Center
DESCRIPTION:The Pottsville Free Public Library is pleased to partner with Schuylkill Hope Center again this year for one of our favorite art exhibits. Artwork created by survivors working with Schuylkill Hope Center will be on display in the Library from March 9-21\, along with displays of prominent women in American History. This is exhibit is free to attend\, and is open during all regular Pottsville Library hours.\nThese artists are from throughout the county and use this artwork as a means of empowerment through the healing process. The display’s main goal is to encourage survivors to express themselves artistically\, as well as inspire thought in those who view it.\nAlso\, on Monday\, March 9th\, in honor of International Women’s Day\, a representative from Schuylkill Hope Center will be in the Library to provide information regarding services offered by the agency\, discuss available volunteer opportunities\, and to answer any questions anyone may have about the Art as Healing display.\nPlease join us to view and appreciate the art\, and to support this vital local organization. Note that artwork on display will not be for sale\, and the individual artists’ names are not made available for privacy reasons.

This one-hour class will help improve your internet skills\, including how to do better internet searches\, what to watch out for\, and more. \nThe computer classes are free\, but a Pottsville Library card and advanced registration are required due to limited seating. DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the debut novel of author Stephen Wasilewski on Saturday\, April 11th from 11am to 2pm. Copies will be available to purchase and be signed during the event. \nThe River Between Us is set in Vietnam and follows two childhood best friends whose unbreakable bond is slowly fractured by war\, politics\, and betrayal. Caught in forces far beyond their control\, they must navigate love\, loss\, and loyalty in a world where survival demands impossible choices. What they become\, and what they lose\, will test whether their bond can survive. \nAuthor’s Bio \nStephen Wasilewski is a well-known and respected business owner in Schuylkill County who provides vocational support and career development services to students with disabilities. He is a graduate of Kutztown University and Misericordia University\, where he majored in social studies education and earned a master’s degree in business. He enjoys writing\, traveling\, and sharing his lived experiences through educational settings. \nHis passion for history and uncovering forgotten narratives deepened during his travels across Asia. He visited historical sites such as the Củ Chi tunnels and the Independence Museum in Ho Chi Minh City\, Vietnam\, as well as the War and Women’s Human Rights Museum in Seoul\, South Korea. There\, he encountered the enduring scars of war\, learning about tragedies like the Mỹ Lai massacre and the suffering of Korea’s “comfort women.” \nThe River Between Us\, his debut novel\, was inspired by a letter he read in Korea that honored women’s strength and their ability to survive horrific and inhumane conditions during wartime. Blending historical fact with fiction\, the novel tells a story of survival\, sisterhood\, and quiet resistance in the face of sweeping political change. Stephen believes that stories\, especially those rooted in pain\, can heal\, connect\, and inspire readers to carry their own stories forward across generations. \n\nAuthor’s Note \nThe River Between Us is set in rural Vietnam from the 1930s through the post-war era\, exploring the enduring bond between two childhood friends whose lives are fractured by war\, politics\, and personal betrayal. Minh and Mai grow up inseparable in a quiet village\, but as colonial rule ends and the country descends into chaos\, their paths diverge\, Minh becoming a mother and caretaker amid hardship\, while Mai disappears into the shifting loyalties of a divided nation. \nThis story is a work of fiction\, but it is rooted in real places\, real pain\, and the real strength of Vietnamese families\, especially women\, who endured unspeakable loss while holding on to joy wherever they could find it. The River Between Us was written to honor the quiet resilience of villages\, mothers\, daughters\, and friendships that survived beyond war\, hunger\, and grief. \nMinh and Mai are not just characters to me; they are voices of memory\, sisterhood\, and healing. DESCRIPTION:The Pottsville Free Public Library will be offering the Microsoft Word for Beginners workshop for adults on Tuesday\, April 21 at 5:30 PM. (Remember: street parking in downtown Pottsville is free after 5 PM!) Need to type something up but not sure how to start? This one-hour class will cover what you really need to know to type a document\, check your spelling\, and save or print it. \nThe computer classes are free\, but a Pottsville Library card and advanced registration are required due to limited seating. Those attending the workshop will be using the laptops in the computer lab at the Pottsville Library. Library cards are free for all Schuylkill County residents; contact the Circulation Desk at 570-622-8880 x10 or visit the Library to check the status of your card or to sign up for the class.
